It's easy to give thanks when all is well. What's hard is gratitude in the middle of loss, illness, fear. And yet that is where it holds us most.

There's an old story of a wise man with a horse and a son. When the horse ran off, the neighbors said, “what misfortune.” He answered, “Good, bad — who knows?” The horse returned with twelve wild horses. “What luck!” they said. “Who knows?” His son fell from one and broke his legs — and so was not taken to a war from which no one returned.

We don't always know the whole film. Gratitude in hardship doesn't deny the pain; it simply stops insisting we already know what this moment means. Set down the verdict of “this is wrong” and breathe.

You don't have to be grateful for the problem. You can be grateful for what remains intact within it: your breath, this moment, the part of you that watches and does not break. Lie down, close your eyes, and find one single thing to give thanks for right now.
