Day 27: Why Sleep Is Not Enough

Sleep is wonderful, and you need it. But sleep does not remove all the stress from your system. Think of your nervous system like a bathtub. Every night, sleep pulls the plug and drains some of the water — the daily stress, the surface tension. But some water always remains. A little bit sticks to the bottom. Over days, months, years, that leftover stress accumulates. That accumulation is what we call aging, and it is also what creates disease, burnout, and that feeling of being tired even after eight hours of rest. The practice of lying down with your eyes open, breathing, and watching your thoughts like waves pulls the plug deeper. It reaches the stress that sleep cannot touch. That is why, after twenty minutes of resting and watching, you often feel different than you do after a full night of sleep. You are not just rested. You are released.
