Day 19: Inherited Beliefs

Almost every belief you hold about yourself, about others, about how life works, was given to you by someone else. Your parents gave you some. Your teachers gave you others. Your religion, your culture, your favorite influencers, the books you read — they all added to the backpack. You did not choose most of these beliefs. You inherited them, like a set of hand-me-down clothes that do not quite fit. And most of them are not even true. They are just old. When you lie down with your eyes open and watch your thoughts like waves, you begin to see these inherited beliefs clearly. They appear as waves — familiar waves, but still just waves. You do not have to fight them or analyze them. You just watch them. And as you watch, you realize: these are not mine. I can let them pass.
