For years I kept thinking the same thing: the right person will fill this emptiness, the right relationship will finally make me whole. So I chased love, and I found it, and the emptiness stayed. Then I thought: more money will fix this, more success, more security. I got those things, and the void did not budge. Then I thought: the right spiritual teacher, the right practice, the right retreat. I found all of them, and still the emptiness remained. That is when I finally understood something crucial: the void is not a hole to be filled by anything outside of you. It is a forgetting to be remembered by you, sitting alone, in silence, without anything to distract you from yourself. So I started lying down with my eyes open and watching my thoughts. No filling. Just watching. And slowly, the void began to transform.
